Hinze Dam is the easiest hinterland escape from Broadbeach: a 30-minute drive inland to a huge lake ringed by bushland, with a spillway lookout, a dam wall walk, a cafe on the water and free picnic parklands. From Koko Broadbeach you can be there by mid-morning and back for dinner. Here is how to shape the day, stop by stop.
Morning: the spillway and the dam wall walk
Drive time and parking: about 30 minutes from Koko; free parking at the visitor centre near the top of the spillway. Not to miss: the Spillway Lookout, a viewing platform facing the dam wall. When the dam is spilling, the water tumbles down the centre of the wall into a pool below before bending away into the Nerang River.
Start at the visitor centre end while the air is still cool. From the lookout, pick up the dam wall walk, which meanders out across the spillway for a few kilometres with wide views over Advancetown Lake and the valley below. The first stretch is flat and stroller-friendly, so you can turn back whenever you like. If you are short on time, walk just to the first lookout point and save the full length; the best views come early. Bring a hat and water, as shade is patchy along the wall.
Lunch: the View Cafe on the dam wall
Drive time and parking: no extra drive, the cafe sits beside the visitor centre; same free car park. Not to miss: a window table overlooking Advancetown Lake. Named dish: the fish and chips, eaten looking straight out over the water, or the eggs benedict with smoked salmon if you have made an early start.
The View Cafe is perched on one side of the dam wall next to the information centre, and it is a genuine destination in its own right rather than a roadside stop. The menu runs to home-style meals: burgers, salads, baked goods and the fish and chips locals keep coming back for. Kitchen hours are 9am to 3:30pm on weekdays and 8am to 4:30pm on weekends. Tables near the glass go first, so arrive a little before the noon rush. If you would rather not sit down, order takeaway and carry it to the parkland.
Afternoon: the picnic parkland and bike trails
Drive time and parking: a two-minute drive or short walk to the Picnic Parkland; a second free car park serves this area. Not to miss: the shaded lawns above the lake, made for a lazy afternoon. What to skip if short on time: the far bike trails; stay near the parkland and the playground.
The Picnic Parkland is the family heart of Hinze Dam, with free electric barbecues, covered picnic tables, a children’s playground, toilets and plenty of grass, all free to use. It is the natural place to slow down after the morning walk, whether you fire up a barbecue or just spread a rug in the shade. Easy bike and walking trails lead off from here for anyone with energy left, and the kookaburras are bold enough to keep the kids entertained. Late afternoon light on the lake is the payoff for lingering.
The drive: the hinterland loop back
Drive time and parking: about 30 minutes back to Broadbeach via Nerang and the M1. Not to miss: the green, winding descent out of Advancetown before the motorway.
Retrace the Advancetown and Nerang roads back towards the coast, and the drive itself is part of the day: rolling hinterland, farm dams and the occasional roadside stand before the M1 delivers you back to the beach. You reach the Nerang exit within about twenty minutes of leaving the dam, and Broadbeach soon after. Time it so you crest back into the built-up coast around dusk, and the contrast between quiet bushland and Koko’s beachfront lights is the perfect end to the loop.
